Action Watersports Equality Policy

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy

Policy Statement

Action Watersports is committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive and respectful environment for our guests, employees, volunteers, partners and visitors.

We believe that everyone should have fair and equitable access to employment, facilities, services, activities, resources and opportunities provided by Action Watersports.

We value diversity and will challenge discrimination, harassment, bullying, victimisation and other behaviour that conflicts with this policy.

Our aim is to ensure that people are treated as individuals, with dignity and respect, and are not unfairly disadvantaged because of who they are.

Our Commitment

Action Watersports will:

  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion throughout our employment practices, activities and services.
  • Treat guests, employees, volunteers and applicants fairly and respectfully.
  • Provide opportunities to participate wherever this can be achieved safely and reasonably.
  • Take reasonable steps to remove unnecessary barriers to participation.
  • Make reasonable adjustments for disabled people where required and reasonably practicable.
  • Consider individual needs rather than making assumptions about a person's ability to participate.
  • Ensure recruitment, promotion, training and development decisions are based on an individual's skills, experience, suitability and the genuine requirements of the role.
  • Provide a working environment in which staff and volunteers feel respected, supported and able to develop.
  • Challenge discriminatory or inappropriate behaviour.
  • Take complaints or concerns relating to discrimination, harassment or victimisation seriously.

Equality Act 2010

Action Watersports operates in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

We will not unlawfully discriminate against anyone because of the protected characteristics of:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

Our commitment applies to recruitment and employment as well as the facilities, activities and services we provide.

We will not tolerate direct or indirect discrimination, harassment or victimisation.

Access to Activities and Services

Action Watersports believes in the positive impact sport and physical activity can have and wants as many people as reasonably possible to be able to participate.

We will therefore:

  • Make our activities, facilities and services as accessible as reasonably practicable.
  • Discuss individual requirements with participants, parents, carers, schools or group organisers where appropriate.
  • Consider reasonable adjustments or alternative arrangements which may enable someone to participate safely.
  • Provide clear information about genuine safety, age, physical or activity-specific requirements.
  • Avoid excluding someone solely because of a disability or other protected characteristic where a reasonable and safe adjustment can be made.

Some watersports activities have genuine safety, equipment, supervision or operational requirements. Where an adjustment cannot reasonably or safely be made, we will explain the reason and, where possible, discuss a suitable alternative.

Disability and Reasonable Adjustments

Action Watersports recognises its duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled employees, applicants and customers where they would otherwise experience a substantial disadvantage.

Adjustments may include changes to working arrangements, methods of communication, procedures, equipment, access arrangements or the way a service or activity is delivered.

What is reasonable will depend on the individual circumstances, including safety, practicality, effectiveness and the nature of the activity.

Employees and Volunteers

Every member of staff and volunteer is responsible for supporting this policy.

Staff and volunteers are expected to:

  • Treat others with dignity and respect.
  • Behave professionally and inclusively.
  • Challenge or report discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation.
  • Consider individual needs when delivering activities and services.
  • Follow Action Watersports policies and procedures.
  • Undertake relevant training where required.

Appointments to paid or voluntary positions will be made on the basis of an individual's knowledge, skills, experience and suitability for the role.

Action Watersports will make reasonable adjustments during recruitment and employment where required.

Unacceptable Behaviour

Action Watersports will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, bullying, victimisation or abusive behaviour from employees, volunteers, participants, customers, parents, carers, contractors or visitors.

Concerns should be raised with a Director or appropriate manager and will be dealt with fairly and appropriately.

Employees or volunteers who breach this policy may be subject to disciplinary action. Serious breaches may result in dismissal or termination of the volunteering arrangement.

Where inappropriate behaviour is carried out by a customer, participant or visitor, Action Watersports reserves the right to take appropriate action, including asking the individual to leave the site or refusing further participation where justified.

Responsibility and Review

Everyone representing Action Watersports has a responsibility to support the principles contained within this policy.

Management has overall responsibility for ensuring that equality, diversity and inclusion are considered within our employment practices, activities, facilities and services.

This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner where changes to legislation, statutory guidance, governing body requirements or Action Watersports operations make an earlier review appropriate.
